Why are all these folks who want to force this sign ordinance on us worried about a view? Real men want business and new jobs for Polk County, not just pretty views, right? It is signs - flashing signs, billboards, streamers, big, tall, bright-colored, lighted- plastic signs - that will bring people to Polk County! Right? Wrong! Natural beauty is one of Polk County's key assets and offers real hope for eco nomic development, more and belter paying jobs, if we don't foul it up. Ed McMahon, president of Scenic America, says people often dismiss concern for a view as "a lightweight issue", pushed by granola eaters, or perhaps in Polk County's case by "retirees who don't care about jobs anymore." This is wrong-headed and could lead Polk County down the path to ugly. The Urban Land Institute says: "You can put a dollar value on a view. As a res ident I think that although we have some problems we are working to improve. The press sometimes has a way of expressing what they consider as important information taken out of context. This recent election and the reasons for concern just might be a good example. When things happen that one might disagree with they should bring it out in the open for all to sec. We need to know so we can prevent it from happening again if we so desire. Both Kathleen McMillian and Paul Smith should be elated by the close ness of the vote. It's too bad that one had to lose as both seemed worthy. The actions of one or two people which were deemed to be wrong has opened the eyes of many and educated us as to what should or should not be done in the future. Columbus is not a town that needs to look up to Tryon. It has many values that I'm sure Iryon would like to have George Scofield The Polk County Board of commissioners will view a of a n Car 01i n a Coalition for Scenic Beauty presentation on this issue Mondav at 5 n ni at the courthouse.
